Object categories

Impact-object categories

Objects with a negative environmental impact are divided into four categories. The category determines the scope of environmental requirements and the permit instrument.

EcoEsep does not determine an object's category. It is assigned through impact assessment, screening, or by the operator under the Environmental Code; in a project it is entered from the permit documents.

The category is determined first by ACTIVITY TYPE (Appendix 2 to the Environmental Code). The emission-volume thresholds apply to activities that Appendix 2 does not list.

Category I

By activity type: The activity is listed in section 1 of Appendix 2 to the Environmental Code.

By emission volume: 1,000 tonnes per year or more

Permit instrument: Environmental permit for impact

Category II

By activity type: The activity is listed in section 2 of Appendix 2 to the Environmental Code.

By emission volume: 500 to 1,000 tonnes per year

Permit instrument: Environmental permit for impact

Category III

By activity type: The activity is listed in section 3 of Appendix 2 to the Environmental Code.

By emission volume: 10 to 500 tonnes per year

Permit instrument: Environmental impact declaration

Category IV

By activity type: The activity is not assigned to categories I–III, and emissions fall below the category III threshold.

By emission volume: under 10 tonnes per year

Permit instrument: No permit document required
